Volunteers are the heart and soul of The Lighthouse. With kindness, compassion, and dedication, they bring comfort and hope to children and youth as they navigate the loss of a loved one. Their support also means so much to caregivers, who are not only grieving themselves but also guiding their child through this difficult journey. Time and again, our volunteers tell us that while they come to give, they leave with even more—friendship, connection, and the deep fulfillment of making a difference.

Our Lighthouse volunteers generously commit their time in a variety of roles. Read about some of the volunteer opportunities with Lighthouse, below.

Group Facilitator

Group Facilitators are part of a team of staff and volunteers who lead discussions and facilitate play and other activities that help children and youth connect with others, explore their feelings and experiences with grief. Facilitators receive comprehensive training and ongoing support from our professional staff and volunteer approximately 3 hours in the evening, once every two weeks.

Steps to becoming a Group Facilitator:

Attend a facilitator information session
Complete an application form, provide a current police clearance including vulnerable sector screening, and provide 3 references
Meet our Services staff for an interview
Attend Facilitator Training (21 hrs)

Event Volunteer

We rely on our event volunteers to prepare, organize, and assist at our fundraising events. This can include:

Delivering flyers
Setting up and tearing down events
Interacting with the community
Assisting participants
Manning a stand
Selling tickets
